Project Description

Welcome to the November 2017 issue of Amarantine.

In this issue, Amarantine studies whether Personal and Professional Development is something we should all be doing, or not?

Editor's Note

Many of you may have come across the word “Amarantine” before, as it is the title of the 2007 Grammy winning album recorded by the famous Irish singer/songwriter/musician and producer Enya. When asked about the origin of this title, Enya explained “Poets use the word to describe an everlasting flower, and I loved the image of that.

When we go back in time, we find that the word originates from the ancient Greek word of “amárantos”, which stands for unfading, eternal and infinite. Over the years, a beautiful orchid, a weed and a colour have been named after it too.

To us here at Amarantine, this exactly represents what we believe that personal and professional development is all about. We start learning from the moment that we are born, and we never stop learning until the day we die. It really isn’t optional, as there’s simply no getting away from it. It is a continuous, eternal and infinite process.

Some of our learnings happen consciously, as we follow formal education, on-board training programmes or practice to learn new skills. But much of our development also happens in the unconscious space, where we simply take a moment to think or reflect, speak with other people, watch the telly or browse the internet.

With Amarantine, your personal and professional development guide, we want to inspire your continuous personal and/or professional development. We want to help you bring the unconscious into the conscious, and inspire you as to what more you could do to meet your personal aspirations (or support others in achieving theirs).

I wish you happy reading!

There is, as Emerson says, some central idea or conception of yourself by which all the facts of your life are arranged and classified. Change this central idea and you change the arrangement or classification of all the fact and circumstances of your life

Your thought, belief, and expectation about anything bring about the result you get.  What you think, what you believe, and what you expect about anything make them beneficial or not.

It is note-worthy to remember that the moment you shift how you think about yourself and your circumstances; you and your circumstances will begin to change.

If you want more joy and happiness, wealth and prosperity, peace and balance, calmness, tranquility, and power to overcome challenges and achieve unique success, the greater part of your life must be an inside job (inside out).

I can honestly say that all the various avenues, and there are many, of personal development which I have pursued and (this is the kicker) taken action on, have given me extra years of life. Let me explain.

In 1992, I was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given 9 months to live. Whilst going through the conventional route of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy I decided I would try to beat the odds that were so heavily stacked against me. My journey of exploring what alternatives were on offer led me to experience some personal development methodologies and therapies.

For me, personal development encompasses anything that allows me (personal side of it) to grow and advance (the development part). I explain this, as I will, over the coming editions, be covering a wide variety of topics which might not traditionally come under the personal development banner and this article falls into that category.
